A word on credit cards

GB-licensed gambling sites have been barred from accepting credit cards since April 2020, because gambling with borrowed money was linked to serious harm. That rule does not apply to an operator licensed in the Comoros, which is why American Express, and credit-issued Visa and Mastercard, may work. Our advice is the same as the regulator's reasoning: only gamble with money you already have. Many UK banks also class gambling on a credit card as a cash advance, with a fee and interest from day one.

Currency and fees

Check which currency your balance is held in when you register. If it is not sterling, your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee to every deposit and convert again on the way out, and two conversions can quietly cost a few per cent. The operator's own fees, where there are any, are listed in the cashier. Your card issuer's fees are not, so look at your bank's tariff.

Paying with crypto

Crypto deposits arrive once the network confirms the transaction, which takes from a few minutes to longer if fees are low or the network is busy. Send only the coin on the network the cashier names: Tether, for example, exists on several networks, and sending it on the wrong one can lose it. Prices also move, so a balance deposited in Bitcoin can be worth a different amount in pounds when you cash out.

Deposit and withdraw the same way

Anti-money-laundering practice means withdrawals generally go back to the method you deposited with, where that method supports payouts. Apple Pay and Google Pay deposits are typically paid back to the underlying card. Picking a method that works in both directions saves an extra round of checks later.
